What is USI?
A multi-university organisation dedicated to supporting student interest in sustainability-related academics; constituent university societies open up projects that would otherwise only be open to that university´s student body, giving more students access to exciting hands-on projects and competitions. We host:
Speaker events given by industry veterans and young professionals alike, sharing innovations, discussing challenges, and giving career advice. Events range from panels of speakers and round-robin networking with professionals to technical talks - delivered in an accessible way with little prior knowledge required - covering topics such as the current energy mix, commercially viable renewables, as well as emerging research. To encourage contrasting views, debates are also hosted on themes including base load vs responsive vs entirely renewable energy, the carbon neutrality of biofuels, the geopolitics of oil vs renewables, and to what extent hydrogen is feasible as an energy storage method.
Projects in which student teams solve technical problems faced in industry, receiving guidance throughout from the project partner company. See examples of past projects, as well as this year´s projects in the Projects tab.
An Entrepreneurship competition for sustainability related ventures.
